Mildred and Eugene were living at Copeley Hill, Charlottesville, Virginia, US, in 1956. He was an intern at the University of Virginia Hospital.5
Mildred Ruth Williams died on Dec 24, 2023
Her obituary read:
Mildred Ruth Williams Culbertson of Escondido, California, passed away peacefully on December 24th, 2023, age 95, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Dr. Eugene Culbertson, and mother to Mark (Carol), Marcia (Ken), Malcolm (Letitia), and Scott (Karla). She was born and raised in St. Charles, Virginia, and was the youngest of seven children of Malcolm and Mae Williams. Her grandchildren are Zephyr, Cevacien, Andrea, Matthew, Stuart, Derek, Lucas and Malcolm Todd. Five great grandchildren: Kai, Maren, Matthew, Collin and Luke. Also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Mildred was a gifted and classically trained musician in piano and organ. With a degree in music education from Vanderbilt’s Peabody College, she taught music and other subjects in her hometown. She met Eugene in 1950, on a blind date arranged by her friend Laura Jean (Eugene’s stepmother). He was the love of her life and they married in 1951, embarking on a 73 year union. Although they relocated to California in 1967, she continued to cherish her Appalachian beginnings and was always a repository of that region’s customs and values.
She was known for being impeccably dressed for all occasions, frequently accessorizing with hats and gloves. This earned her the title of “Queen of Costco” at the local Escondido store! In addition to a vivacious and entertaining charm, she also had a perfect memory, never forgetting the birthday of a family member or friend. She continued through the years to perform her piano repertoire, passing her passion and musical abilities to her children and grandchildren. Mildred was a voracious reader and returned to graduate school in mid-life to study the works of James Joyce. She was also a member of the AAUW (American Association of University Women).
Mildred was generous with her time, and talent, and treasure, sharing her love of literature and the arts with her community and family. At the Escondido Public Library, she volunteered teaching English and was awarded “Tutor of the Year” for work she did with her favorite student, Abby. Blessed with a life-long deep and abiding faith, Mildred supported those she loved with words of optimism, wisdom, and encouragement, stressing that above all, kindness was what mattered the most in life.
In her last years she was afflicted with Alzheimer’s and received exceptional care from K&K Welker Senior Services and Takara Hospice, both of Escondido. Her caregivers were wonderful, and Tina was her extra special blessing. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service for Mildred on Sunday March 24th at 1PM, in the Fellowship Hall of Trinity Episcopal Church, 845 Chestnut Street, Escondido. Reverends Barry and LeNoir Culbertson will officiate.6
