John Carter was born circa 1743. He settled at Stoney Creek with brothers Charles & Dale Stony Creek, Fort Blackmore, Scott, Virginia, US, 1773.2 He was ordered by the County Court to appraise the estate of Dale Carter along with Archibald Scot, Joseph Butcher and Richard Stanton. on Mar 18, 1778 at Washington, Virginia, US.3 He wasd issued a deed for 400 acres on the northwest side of the Clinch River on 8/21/1781. The property was settled in 1773. On 4/1/1783 he was issued a deed for 172 acres on the north side of the Clinch River.4 Ordered by County Court to appriase the estate of Susana Carter along with William Blackmore, Andrew Davis, and John Norris.5 He was 07/ /1786; "a party of Indians came to the house of John Carter, on the Clinch, and killed his wife and six children [names unknown], and after plundering the house, placed the dead bodies in the same and burned the whole;" John remarried but all information pertaining to his second wife and family has been lost.6 He From the unpublished manuscript, Indian Atrocities Along the Clinch, Powell and Holston Rivers, pages 158-159.
John Carter, a brother of the Dale Carter, who was killed at Blackmore’s Fort in 1774, had settled on a 400 acre tract of land on the northwest side of Clinch River, about 4 miles below Blackmore’s Fort, in Scott Co., in the year 1773. He had married a daughter of Joseph Blackmore and had seven children.
On August 27, 1787, Alexander Barnett, County Lieutenant of Russell Co., VA, wrote the following to the Governor (1):
That on July 9th last, the Indians had attacked the frontier, this time killing the wife of John Carter and six of his children, and at the same time plundering and setting fire to his house, thus reducing the bodies of his wife and children to ashes.
R. M. Addington, History of Scott County, page 99, says:
In a short time after moving to his farm, having planted his crop, and completing such other preparations as were necessary to move back to the fort, he went out one morning to listen for his horses and cattle, which had bells on, intending to collect them up prior to moving back to Fort Blackmore on the next day. This was locust year, and he went out early in order to collect his stock before the locust began their noises. He had proceeded about sixty yards from his house when he heard his wife cry out, "Oh John". Turning he saw eight or nine Indians entering his house, and at the same time they fired at him. Realizing his perilous situation, he thought it best to make his escape and go for assistance, rather than fight and exasperate the savages in an unequal contest. Hastening to the fort, he collected a company and returned to his house, which he found in flames. With some poles, his companions succeeded in pulling out of the burning coals the charred remains of his wife and six children, which they buried. When they had done this, they heard a plaintive groaning a little ways from the house, in the weeds and grass. They went to the place from whence the sounds came and found his little daughter, about ten years of age, with an awful gash across her abdomen and her entrails falling out. They carried her to the river and washed her, but she died before they finished. (Judge Wood and Peter Honeycutt’s Letter, Draper MSS 4 C 27)

John Rhea Carter Jr. was born on Jun 10, 1796 at Virginia, US.5,6,3
Carter history states that John Immigrated to America about 1790. This is in conflict with immigration data for this family.7
John opened the first Carter Store on Big Stony Creek. This small country store, opened some time before the Civil War, wasn’t an elaborate affair, it didn’t have a big stock of merchandise. Pioneer settlers could afford only the barest necessities and those were what the first store offered. Gunpowder, lead for bullets, lead shot, a few steel traps, salt, pepper, needles and thread, and a few simple hand tools made up most of the stock.8
John Rhea Carter Jr. married Jemima Wadkins Carter, daughter of Peter Carter and Ursula Rainey, on Aug 27, 1820 at Scott, Virginia, US.1,9,10,11,7
John was commissioned as a LT. in the VA regimental militia on Apr 22, 1822.9
He was listed as a farmer in the 1850 census with 3,570 acres.12

John Rhea Carter Sr. was born on Feb 25, 1769 at Amherst, Virginia, US.3,2,4 On August 21, 1781 the Russell County Land Entry Book shows that John Carter acquired his father's (Dale Carter) land on the north of the Clinch river which was surveyed December 26 1773. John was recognized as "Heir in Law." This was adjusted on October 3, 1798 to 200 acres as reflected in the Russell Co. Patent book p 308.
On January 21, 1803 he sold 75 acres of this land to his brother Joseph and on June 17 1809 sold the remaining 130 acres to William Cocke for $666.

On October 6, 1807 he bought 120 acres on the south side of the Clinch, part of the Thomas Blackmore, Jr. patent from Thomas and Rebecca Easterland. He sold this land to Isaiah Salyers on February 20, 1810.
On December 16th 1808 he bought 200 acres on the south side of the Clinch River, part of John Blackmore's corn right, from Joseph and Sarah Whitley. It was here that John made his home.
On March 1, 1813, John Carter and John Buster bought 58 acres on the side of Copper Ridge from David Cocke, Sr.
In 1813 and 1814 he aquired additional land and in 1817 he sold five tracts to James Cocke and John R. Carter.5 He was listed in the Amherst County Court Order book 1784-1787 (p 4). He personally appeared and chose John Bickley as his guardian. Bickley was also appointed a guardian of his sister and brothers. in 1784 at Amherst, Virginia, US.6 He immigrated in 1790 directly from England to Southwest Virginia with his brother Joseph according to Joseph Miller in the book Desecndants of Captain Thomas Carter. This is in conflict with earlier records which indicate that he was in Virginia earlier. It seems likely that he was born in Vrigina and it was his father that immigrated from England.7
John Rhea Carter Sr. married Elizabeth Day, daughter of Mary Ann Day, on Apr 6, 1791 at Amherst, Virginia, US.8,4,9 John Rhea Carter Sr. disappeared from Scott County records. Tradition has it that later in life he moved to Alabama and raised another family.5
John Rhea Carter Sr. married Nancy Hocut on Feb 26, 1828 this marriage probably took place in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama.3,4
John Rhea Carter Sr. died after 1828 at Alabama, US.10
