Mr. McNeil was born in Wise County to the late Carl and Nannie Cox McNeil. He was an electrician and worked in the Norfolk Naval shipyard, building ships during World War II. He later volunteered for service in the Merchant Marines, hauling troops, supplies and passengers all over the world during World War II, Korean War and the early part of the Vietnam War. Most of his career was spent in shipping during peace times. Mr. McNeil lived in New York and California for the remainder of his Merchant career. In 1961, he decided to leave this life and career that he loved and return to Wise County. He worked in the mining industry and later settled on a farm in Scott County to raise his children. He was an avid union member and held office in the UMWA and the MFOW.

Surviving are his sons, Brian McNeil, Dungannon, Va., Tom McNeil and his wife Hope, Wise, and Joseph McNeil, Wise; daughters, Carlene Cruz, California, Carmen Miller and her husband Wesley, Dungannon, and Marcie Calhoun, Gate City, Va; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Tony Nunley officiating. Burial will follow in the Collins-Gilliam Cemetery, Wise, where military graveside rites will be conducted by local veterans groups.
