In 1838, in a land dispute, court records name John's children as all 'infants' (meaning under age 21 years) and heirs of 'John Vicars, Deceased'. Thus, is it clear he died prior to 1838. It could be as early as 1830, since his wife Marrinda is listed alone with children in the 1830 census.

' John Vicars was the fifth child of Robert and Lydia (Jackson) Vicars and was born about 1782 in Washington Co., VA. On 15 May 1810, he married Marinda Alves, daughter of Forrest Alves, in Chesterfield Co., VA. John vicars died about 1830 probably in Scott Co., VA. His heirs are listed in the settlement of his father's estate 2 Apr. 1839 (Russell Co., VA, Deed Bk. 10, pages 453-455).
Children of John and Marinda (Alves) Vicars of Scott Co., VA: 1. Robert P. Vicars, born 13 Apr. 1813, Richmond, VA, married 10 Oct. 1841 Unity Dorton. He died in Russell Co., VA 27 Jan. 1896. . . . had 9 children.
2. Eleanor Vicars, born about 1814 Russell Co., VA. We do not know of marriage or children. (We understand there was an Eleanor Vicars that married a William Barker, but have no info. on this.)
3. Jacob Vicars, born 1815/17, married Susan _____. This Jacob was in Lee Co., VA in 1860 and since he had a daughter, Marinda, we believe this is a son of John and Miranda Vicars.
4. Nancy Vicars, no info. known. There was a Nancy Vicars that had a daughter Marinda and a son William (wife was Eliza). This Nancy was in Scott Co., VA in 1900 Census living in household of William Vicars and she was listed as age 70 and the mother of William Vicars.
5. James J. Vicars . . . . (see his file)
6. John Vicars. We believe that this is the John Vicars that was listed in the McMinn Co., TN, census in 1860 with a wife, Martha A. Crawford, five children, one of whom was named Marinda. A John Vicars was in the 1850 Lawrence Co., KY, census at age 25, a wife, Louisa, and a son William H. Vicars. The birthdate of the William in Lawrence Co., KY would be 1849 and so would the William in McMinn Co., TN. One of the chidlren of John Vicars of McMinn Co., Tn - Lewis A. Vicars married Sarah E. Stapleton in Russell Co., VA on 24 Sept. 1883.

Joseph Vicars was Teacher; surveyor.3 He Per Louise Evans letter, Nov. 7, 1995: 'The records I have for 'my' Thomas Vickers born in Russell Co., VA, was Vicars BUT when he moved to Scott Co. and married, etc. did let his name appear on census records as 'Vickers'. He was my Paul Vickers' uncle & took care of Paul from census records 1860, 1870, Scott Co. when Joel Vicars using name VICKERS! married after Paul's mother Elizabeth Dean Vickers died soon after his birth.'

Per Louise Evans undated letter I received Nov 11, 1995: 'It seems Elizabeth died soon after Paul's birth for in several documents of Joel Vickers family records the name, Joel alwyas appears as 'Joel and Paul' so it is believed my Paul was living with Joel and his parents until when about 7 yrs old he is on census record listed with children of Thomas Vickers, older brother of Joel. It was about 6 or 7 years after my Paul's birth that Joel married Susannah McConnell, and my Paul went to live with his uncle, Thomas Vickers.2' He was also known as Joel Vickers.
