E-mail Vernon Easley, dated 11-8-1997: A.4. Thomas VICKERS. A Thomas Vickers was known to be the fourth child of Robert and Lydia Vickers. The following record is derived from two main sources. The first, data extracted from the Vicars Family Quarterly and provided to me by Joan Vickers, is what is known about Thomas Vickers' son and again is quoted as received. Of note is that Thomas was possibly married two times. This also checks with his age (49) at the time of his marriage to Mary Rucker. Both records are included as separate entries in the hope they may eventually be consolidated with further data.
'Thomas Vicars, fourth child of Robert Vicars, was born 22 June 1779 in Washington Co VA and died in McMinn Co TN 17 Mar 1861. He is buried in the Morgan Cemetery near Riceville, McMinn Co TN. About 1828 he married Mary Rucker, born in S. Carolina about 1804. They had 8 children. The 1830 Census of McMinn Co shows a male living in the household between ages 15-20. Thomas Vicars Per 'Easterling Family History' chapter 23: 'According to census records, Thoams & Rebecca Vickers' children were born in Scott, Russell, and Lee Counties of VA. By 1870 the family was in Montgomery Co., KY, and they may have later lived in Nicholas Co., KY. In the 1870 census for Montgomery Co., KY, Rebecca's brother, Thomas Easterling and his son, William Easterling, were listed as memebers of the household.'
Per Louise Evans letter Nov 7 1995: 'The records I have for 'my' Thomas Vickers born in Russell Co., VA, was Vicars but when he moved to Scott Co. and married, etc did let his name appear on census records as 'Vickers'. He was my Paul Vickers' uncle & took care of Paul from census records 1860, 1870, Scott Co. and when Joel Vicars using name VICKERS! married after Paul's mother Elizabeth Dean VICKERS died soon after his birth.'
Narrative supplied by MaryVickers as quoted to her by her aunt ________:
VICKERS BRANCH
'The VICKERS Branch of the family as far as we have found have been in the United States earlier than any other branch. Robert VICARS is our Revolutionary War Ancestor who arrived in the States before the Revolutionary War, although I have yet to learn the date and place.
The name was originally VICARS and has several changes in the spelling today. Thomas VICKERS born around 1818 was the one who changed the spelling to VICKERS He lived in Russell County, Virginia, where many of his descendants still live.
Paul VICKERS (my maternal grandfather and Thomas VICKER'S son) married Luisa Katherina SINGER 17 February 1872 by eloping to Aberdeen, Ohio. They had 10 children, one who died in childhood, and they lived in various areas of Kentucky. My mother Mayme Frances VICKERS-STEWART was fourth from the oldest child.
Because Paul VICKERS was told he had Bright's Disease (at that time it was considered fatal with great suffering for the victim and family) Paul committed suicide in March 1913 rather than have everyone suffer.
Willard Hambrick VICKERS moved to Indiana and Carrie VICKERS married Joseph Hood SMITH and moved to Kansas City, MO where later Mayme joined her and married James Virgil STEWART. The rest of the family stayed in Kentucky.
About 1929 Mayme and James STEWART with children Mary, Virginia and young James moved to Albuquerque where the elder James STEWART found some relief from sinus headaches Mayme died 23 Nov 1939 and is buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque. James married the second time to Leota FORBES and died 23 June 1936. He had one son from that marriage, John Paul STEWART. James Virgil STEWART is also buried in Sunset Memorial Park where Leota FORBES STEWART also is buried.' He was also known as Thomas Vickers.
