When the spring rains came and the river was at flood stage, they would form large rafts or “booms” and float the timber down stream to the market to be sawed into lumber. Hop was working on a river drive that started on the Clinch River in the Ft. Blackmore area with a destination on the Tennessee River, probably Clinton or Chattanooga. He fell off the logs into the river and drowned. They did not find his body until a week or two later.^4,2,9
