William Lawson was also known as William the Rebel.
William Lawson was born on Jun 26, 1731 at Angus, Montrose, Scotland.1 He was a follower of Prince Charles Edward Stuart at Culloden Moor during the Jacobite uprising. They were badly defeated and many scottish highlanders and thier famlies were slaughtered or imprisoned. William Lawson was one of many placed in prison in Northern England. in 1746.2 He was taken prisoner by the English, and the prisoners sent to America to be sold as indentured servants. Landed at Port North, Potomack, MD on 8/5/1747 on the ship Gildart. He was bound over to a local plantation owner as an apprentice by the ship's captain.
Lawson was one of about 200 Scottish rebels who were bound out as apprentices to american plantation owners. The owner of the plantation to which Lawson was bound did not treat him well and Lawson ran away after about a year.2,3

William Lawson II served as a private in the Virginia militia, in the Revolutionary War. From the fall of 1779 to the spring of 1780, he served three months in Capt. Levary's Company as a substitute for Henry Yarberry (Yarborough). He rendezvoused at the Courthouse of Franklin Co., NC. William "recollects then being in his sixteenth year" and resided in Franklin Co., NC. Note: After his discharge, William returned to Franklin Co., NC, where he left his discharge papers with "some of his friends" and never retrieved them. He "was in no battle at all." He went from Franklin Co., to his uncle's "on the water of Adkin" where he spent a year. In the spring of 1781, he served three months as a substitute for Jesse Harris. He marched from Montgomery Co., NC. (See Pension Application for more details.) Note: After his second discharge, William again returned to Franklin Co., NC, where he left his discharge papers with the same "friends and never retrieved them". He resigned 23rd September, 1778. He acquired a pension in 1834, was shown as age 70 in 1835, age 76 in 1840 and living with William Lawson, Jr.3
