In the name of God Amen. I Thomas Carter of Russell County and state of Virginia being sick and weak in body but
of sound mind and disposing memory for which I thank God and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and
being desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give
and bequeath the same in manner following that is to say, After the payment of all my just debts and funeral
expenses I leave to my wife Elizabeth Carter one third part of all my estate both real and personal during the time
of her natural life and after her decease I give the slaves in her thirds of my estate and their increase to my son
Charles Carter & his heirs forever.
I also give and bequeath to my son Charles Carter five sixths of the remaining two thirds of my slaves and personal
estate and also my (masteal?) on Johnsons Branch to him and his heirs forever.
I give and bequeath to my son John Carter the sum of one dollar.
I give and bequeath to my son Morgan Carter the sum of one dollar.
I give and bequeath to my daughter Rosamond Dickenson one sixth of my slaves and personal estate after my wife
has taken out her thirds to her and her heirs forever.
I give and bequeath to my daughter Pheby Jones the sum of one dollar.

Thomas Carter was born on Jun 4, 1672; between 3 and 4 am.2,3,1 He was baptized on Aug 5, 1672; Capt. John Lee, Mr. Th Hayne, Lady Ann Skipworth and Elizabeth Dale were god parents.2
Thomas Carter married Arabella Williamson, daughter of William Williamson, on Aug 22, 1695 at Virginia, US.4,5,6,1 Thomas Carter witnessed the probate of the estate of Captain Thomas Carter on Nov 14, 1700; Property was divided as follows: Wife Catherine to have the home plantation, a negro named Dick, the great table, and one third of the remainder of his personal property; Sons Edward, Thomas Henry (then in England) and John to each have 100 acres of land; son James to have the land left to Henry if he did not return from England. Daughters Elizabeth and Katharine and sons Peter and Joseph had been provided for by their grandfather Dale. Son Thomas to have the home plantation after the death of his mother. The rest of his personal estate to be divided equally among all children.
The estate was valued at 236 pounds and included a parcel of books a silver drinking pot, tankard and twelve silver spoons in addition to the normal furnishings of a plantation.7
