KINGSPORT - After a lengthy illness, George Cowan "Casey" Carter Sr., 80, entered into rest Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Carter was born Dec. 21, 1921 in Scott County, Va., to the late Judge Ezra Thomas Carter and Helen Ford Carter.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Broadwater Carter; three sisters, Helen Carter, Louise Carter Quillen and Elizabeth J. Carter; two brothers, Ford and Ezra T. Carter Jr.

Mr. Carter was a veteran after serving in World War II in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division.

He also was a long time employee with First Tennessee Bank, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Church Circle, Kingsport, and an avid fan of Gate City High School football.


Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, George Jr. and Terri Carter, Thomas W. and Robin K. Carter, all of Kingsport; five grandchildren, Jennifer E. Carter, George C. "Casey" Carter III, Edward J. Carter, Brandon T. Carter and Tyler J. Carter; several nieces, nephews and many loving friends.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Dr. Ron Davis officiating. Music will be provided by Jim Belt Baker and Louise Ammons.

Military graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va., conducted by Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382 of the VFW.

Pallbearers will be George Gibson, Mike Evans, Eddie Richmond, David Lee, Ford Quillen, Cecil Quillen and Skip Cone.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Fry, Dr. James Thornton, Jay Vermillion, James Addington, Pat Loggans, Lynn Loggans and Darrell Dougherty.

The family will be meeting at 1:15 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

She married William David Tittsworth, son of William Kelley Tittsworth and Nannie Belle Perry, on Oct 11, 1940 at Abingdon, Washington, Virginia, US. The service was perfomed by Francis J Brooke Jr a Presbeterian minister from Wythe County. David was listed as a 37 year old operator living in Gate City. She was 24 and living in Kingsport TN. Both were single.^4,3,1 Her married name was Gladys Tittsworth.⁴
     Gladys Tittsworth married Robert Massey Switzer, son of John Albert Switzer and Ann Harney, on Mar 15, 1969 at Kingsport, Sullivan, Tennessee, US.⁴ Her married name was Gladys Switzer.⁴ Gladys Switzer was living in 1995 at 8645 SW D St 94th, Ocala, Florida, US.²

     Game Warden Carter was shot and killed in the Slant section of Scott County while questioning a man. The two began to argue and exchanged shots. Game Warden Carter was struck in the face by a shotgun blast. His body was found 30 hours later.

     The suspect who was seen being chased by Warden Carter was charged with murder but was acquitted.
