KINGSPORT - After a lengthy illness, George Cowan "Casey" Carter Sr., 80, entered into rest Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Carter was born Dec. 21, 1921 in Scott County, Va., to the late Judge Ezra Thomas Carter and Helen Ford Carter.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Broadwater Carter; three sisters, Helen Carter, Louise Carter Quillen and Elizabeth J. Carter; two brothers, Ford and Ezra T. Carter Jr.

Mr. Carter was a veteran after serving in World War II in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division.

He also was a long time employee with First Tennessee Bank, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Church Circle, Kingsport, and an avid fan of Gate City High School football.


Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, George Jr. and Terri Carter, Thomas W. and Robin K. Carter, all of Kingsport; five grandchildren, Jennifer E. Carter, George C. "Casey" Carter III, Edward J. Carter, Brandon T. Carter and Tyler J. Carter; several nieces, nephews and many loving friends.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Dr. Ron Davis officiating. Music will be provided by Jim Belt Baker and Louise Ammons.

Military graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va., conducted by Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382 of the VFW.

Pallbearers will be George Gibson, Mike Evans, Eddie Richmond, David Lee, Ford Quillen, Cecil Quillen and Skip Cone.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Fry, Dr. James Thornton, Jay Vermillion, James Addington, Pat Loggans, Lynn Loggans and Darrell Dougherty.

The family will be meeting at 1:15 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Big Blue Booster Athletic Fund, c/o Gate City High School, 127 Beech St., Gate City, Va. 24251.

     The suspect who was seen being chased by Warden Carter was charged with murder but was acquitted.
