Sarah Dingus was also known as Sarah J Smith. Some records reflect her as Sarah Dingus, which was her mother's maden name. Her death certificate first lists both parents as "unkown" but then John Smith and Elizabeth Dingus are added. Her marraige records used Dingus, but her children's birth certificates usually reflect Smith. This leads to some confusion in tracing this family. No record of her mothre's marriage has yet been found.2 She was born on Jun 22, 1876 at Fort Blackmore, Scott, Virginia, US. Note that the birth date would be about 1880 based on marriage records.1,2,3
Sarah Dingus wasremembered by her grandson. Sarah Jane Dingus is my grandmother. She married Emmett Johnson Duncan of Duncan Mill in Rye Cove, Va. They had 10 children. This woman took care of me off and on until I was almost 16 years old. Her mother was Mary Elizabeth Dingus daughter of Thomas Jefferson Dingus and Miara Babb Dingus. She was wonderful and could do anything from old time cures & medicines to making soap during hog killing season, curing country hams and ringing chickens necks until she was 80 years old. She would pluck'em, boil water to wash and skin them, gut them and pan fry the best chicken in Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee. I still think about her all the time. I am Karl R.
