He later made his father proud by following in his footsteps becoming a Lead Technician in the installation and repair of telephone fiber optic electronic equipment.
When illness struck, Gary was confined to working at home, owning and operating a small woodworking shop.
Gary was preceded in death by both sets of paternal and maternal grandparents.
He is survived by his parents John Selby and wife Catherine. Vera Lane Jeffers and husband Ron; his three sons, Gary "Allen" Selby, Jr., Stephen Phillip Selby, Sr., both of Blountville and Brady Lee Hite of Kentucky; One young lady who held the title of daughter in his heart, Randi Nicely; Two grandsons Stephen "Phillip" Selby, Jr. and Neyland Chase Hite. A bonus granddaughter Genesis Grim; two brothers, Daryl and James Selby; one sister Gina Selby Compton; two step brothers Tony and Mark Cox.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Chapel for James Brady Selby, 2, who died at 2 a.m. at the home of his parents, Mr. and Ms. Joe W. Selby, Kingsport, Route No. 2.
The Rev. Omar Hall, pastor of the First Christian Church, will be in charge of the service. Burial will be in Gunnings cemetery.
He is survived by his parents. three brothers, John, a twin, Joe Pat, and Eugene Allen, his maternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Miller of Sullivan Gardens, and his paternal grandparents, Mrs. Ollie Selby, Bountville, Tenn., and George S. L. Selby, Knoxviller, Tenn.1
