Charles Allen Culbertson, age 56 of Pennington Gap, VA entered into rest at Indian Path Medical Center on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was a 1977 graduate of Pennington High School and a former employee of Powell Mountain Coal Company as a prep plant operator. Allen is preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte Culbertson, brother, Roger Culbertson. Paternal grand parents Mark and Nellie Culbertson, grandmother Laura Jean Culbertson. Maternal grand parents Frank and Goldie Garrett. Mother-in-law Wanda Lundy and a special friend, John Haynes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Jackie Culbertson, and one son Cody Culbertson both of the home. Father, Charles Culbertson, brother David Culbertson and wife Karen. Father-in-law Eddie Lundy, sister-in-laws, Tammy Garrett and husband Kelly, Kimberly Wilkinson and husband Steve. Stacy Alsup and husband Greg. Nephews, Jacob Napier, Joshua Campbell and Lucas Alsup. Great-niece, Isabella Napier. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 8:00 pm at Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap on Saturday September 5, 2015. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Barry Culbertson and Pastor Chuck Grimm officiating. Graveside service will follow in Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway. Pallbearers will be Cody Choate, Billy Collins, Greg Kilgore, T.J. Quinley, T.J. Thomas and Chris Thomas.      Charles Lenard Culbertson was a teacher in the seventh grade of Dungannon High School for two years before becoming a math teacher and guidance counselor at Willows High School in Willows CA a position he held for 27 years.2 His Social Security Number was 564-14-4378.3 He was educated; at the Dungannon High School, and graduated from Berea College in Berea KY with a BA in Economics, and California State University, Chico with a MA in Guidance & Counseling.2 He was born on Jun 17, 1911 at Dungannon, Scott, Virginia, US.2,4,5,1 He married Alice Elizabeth Nicoll, daughter of John William Nicoll and Clara Powers, on Jun 13, 1940 at Bakersfield, California, US.2,4,5 Charles Lenard Culbertson entered service on 9/1/1942. After basic training at Camp Robinson Arkansas, he entered Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, GA. He was commissioned as a second Lieutenant on 3/18/1943. He served as Batallion Adjunct, 9th Armored Inf. Bn -- 6th Armd Division, 3rd Army. He was seriously wounded in action 1/4/1945 during the battle of the bulge at Bastogine Belgium. He retired from the service as a Captain on 4/5/1949 after 51 months of hospitalization and recuperation. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Sharpshooter, and 4 Battle Stars.6,2 He died on Jan 18, 1996 at Glenn, California, US, at age 84.2,3,7 He was buried at Willows Cemetery, Willows, Glenn, California, US.8
