Funeral services will be conducted at 11; a.m. Saturday with the Rev. J. B. Craft in charge. Burial will be in the family cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Elizabeth Johnson Carter, one daughter, Mrs C. H. Kitts of Clothier, W. Va. three sons, John Edgar of Nickelsville,Va. Clyde of High Coal, W. Va. and Mack of Rye Cove. two sisters, Mrs J.J.Alley and Miss Sadie Carter, both of Bristol, and one brother Charles P. Carter of St. Joseph, Mo.3,4 He was buried at John Duncan Sr. Cemetery - S East Stone Gap, Scott, Virginia, US, with his wife ELizabeth J (Johnson) Carter. They share a stone.4

     George Carter Sr. was a long time employee with First Tennessee Bank, retiring in 1986.2 He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Church Circle, Kingsport.2 He was; an avid fan of Gate City High School football.2 He served in World War II in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division.2 He married Ruth Broadwater.2 George Carter Sr. was born on Dec 21, 1921 at Scott, Virginia, US.2 He died on Dec 30, 2001 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Sullivan, Tennessee, US, at age 80.2 His obituary was published as follows: George Carter, 80, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - After a lengthy illness, George Cowan "Casey" Carter Sr., 80, entered into rest Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Carter was born Dec. 21, 1921 in Scott County, Va., to the late Judge Ezra Thomas Carter and Helen Ford Carter.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Broadwater Carter; three sisters, Helen Carter, Louise Carter Quillen and Elizabeth J. Carter; two brothers, Ford and Ezra T. Carter Jr.

Mr. Carter was a veteran after serving in World War II in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division.

He also was a long time employee with First Tennessee Bank, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Church Circle, Kingsport, and an avid fan of Gate City High School football.


Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, George Jr. and Terri Carter, Thomas W. and Robin K. Carter, all of Kingsport; five grandchildren, Jennifer E. Carter, George C. "Casey" Carter III, Edward J. Carter, Brandon T. Carter and Tyler J. Carter; several nieces, nephews and many loving friends.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Dr. Ron Davis officiating. Music will be provided by Jim Belt Baker and Louise Ammons.

Military graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va., conducted by Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382 of the VFW.

Pallbearers will be George Gibson, Mike Evans, Eddie Richmond, David Lee, Ford Quillen, Cecil Quillen and Skip Cone.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Fry, Dr. James Thornton, Jay Vermillion, James Addington, Pat Loggans, Lynn Loggans and Darrell Dougherty.

The family will be meeting at 1:15 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Big Blue Booster Athletic Fund, c/o Gate City High School, 127 Beech St., Gate City, Va. 24251.
