Dale Carter was born on Aug 9, 1744 at Stafford, Virginia, US.2,3,4 Henry brought suit against Dale for debt. (See Amherst Co. Court Records 1766-9 p.120) in 1767 at Amherst, Virginia, US.1 He married Mary Bickley, daughter of John Bickley and Mary Hurt, in 1769 at Virginia, US.5,1,4 Dale Carter appeared on the militia list in Botetourt under Capt. James Thompson in 1772. In 1774 he was on Capt. William Russell's list for 18 days in (then) Fincastle County. Also in 1774, he served 17 days under Capt. David Looney at Ft. Blackmore along with Thomas Carter and John Blackmore.1 On March 25, 1774 he recorded a survey of 96 acres in Fincastle Co. which the Commissioners had approved in December 1773. The land was resurveyed and increased to 200 acres. It lay along the north side of the Clinch River from Widow's Branch on the west to his brother John Carter's land on the east. of property on Mar 25, 1774 at Fincastle, Virginia, US.1 Dale Carter died on Oct 6, 1774 when he was killed by indians. Addington relates the story of the death. "Secretly approaching Fort Blackmore, the Indians came within about seventy-five yards of the gate before they were discovered. Most of the men at the time were sitting upon some logs which lay a short distance from the gate. Evidently seeing this, the Indians decided to make a bold push to enter the fort before the men could recover from their surprise. So, creeping along under the bank of the river, completely hidden from view by the bank and a fringe of trees and underbrush, they were just ready to rush into the fort when Dale Carter, who happened to be about fifty-five steps from the fort, saw them and began to halloo, "Murder, murder!" Upon hearing Carter's cry of alarm, the men ran toward the fort with all possible speed. They succeeded in reaching the gate before the Indians. Thus frustrated in their designs of cutting the men off from the fort, the Indians next turned their attention to Carter. One Indian shot at him but missed him; another shot him through the thigh, inflicting a wound, which though not mortal, rendered him too lame to escape into the fort. One Indian, more bold than the rest, soon ran up to Carter, and killing him with his tomahawk, scalped him. In the meantime, a Mr. Anderson and John Carter, who, with their guns, were either outside the fort, or, on hearing the firing, quickly ran to the outside, endeavored to prevent Carter's being scalped. Anderson shot at the Indian who was in the act of scalping Carter, while John Carter shot at another Indian who was near by. It is not known whether either of these shots took effect; they caused the Indians, however, to scamper off about one hundred yards, from which point they began firing at Anderson and his companion. Fortunately both men were unhurt by this fusillade, although some of the shots hit the stockade only a few inches from Anderson's head. By this time some of the men who had been on the logs hastily climbed into the bastion of the fort nearest the enemy, and opened a well-directed fire upon them. This drove the enemy into the woods where the little garrison dared not follow them. For a few moments the excitement was great in the little fort. Although Dale Carter's halloo of murder, sadly prophetic of his own fate, had cost him his own life, yet, no doubt, his timely warning averted the destruction of the fort. "

A History of the Carter Family provides this excerpt taken from a letter by Major Arthur Campbell to Colonel Wm. Preston:

Royal Oak, October 12, 1774.
... Yesterday also I had an Express from Clynch, with the following intelligence. Thursday ye 6th Ins. at Blackmores one Dale Center was killed and scalped within 55 Steps of the Fort. Mr. Anderson, who had a man with him, fired at the Indian as he was Scalping the Man killed, while the other Man shot another Indian. The Indians fired several shots at Anderson and the other, when they fired off the Bastion at them. The Indians had like to done Andersons job, having struck the stockade a few Inches from his head. Evidently the indians intentions was to make a bold push to enter the Fort as the People was chiefly all some distance away from the Gate upon Logs, and the Enemy it seems had silently crept along under the Bank of the River completely out of view, until poor Carter discovered them, he immediately commenced hallooing Murder; one Gun fired and missed - - - another shot him thro the Thigh, but not Mortal, he could not escape as he was too lame (from the shot) one fellow more bold than the rest soon ran up and tomahaked and scalped him, the remainder of the enemy escaped at the distance of about 100 yards and fired as mentioned before. at near Blackmore's Fort, Scott, Virginia, US, at age 30.6,7,3 He left a will on Mar 18, 1778 at Washington, Virginia, US, with Thomas Carter as adminstrator.1
